At Outdoor Being, we’re all about connecting people with the soul of a place, and the Baduga Community Festival was a perfect example of that mission. Held atop a misty hill in an Ooty village, this year’s event brought the Baduga tribe’s vibrant heritage to life for visitors eager to experience something real.
The day unfolded at a hilltop temple, where the Baduga community welcomed us with rituals that honored their ancestors and land. Chants filled the air, offering a glimpse into traditions that have thrived for centuries. From there, we stepped into Baduga homes—wooden havens where families shared tea, stories, and the quiet pride of their way of life. It was raw, warm, and unscripted.
The cooking session was a hands-on treat. Together with the Baduga, we shaped thuppdhittu, the aroma of curry blended together. The meal that followed—rice, chutneys, and fresh hill veggies—was a taste of the Nilgiris. Then came the dance. Drums roared as dancers in white mundus moved with a rhythm that spoke of joy and resilience, the hill itself seeming to join in.
This half-day wasn’t just an event for us—it was a bridge to the Baduga’s world. They didn’t just host; they shared their culture openly, and we’re honored to have facilitated that exchange. As the sun dipped, casting gold over the hills, Outdoor Being stood proud of what we do: crafting journeys that blend nature and heritage.
